HERITAGE ACTION FOR AMERICA SCORECARD

“We the People” Site a Sham?

President Obama and his administration have come up with a new plan to make it seem like they’re listening to the American people. They’ve devised a new website where “the people” can sign petitions.  And, if enough signatures are gathered, then the President’s staff will review the petition’s policy.

Sounds good right? Well, not so much.

Today on MSNBC, White House Director of Communications Daniel Pfeiffer was asked by host Chuck Todd how the White House would respond if a petition about, say, getting rid of the EPA got enough signatures to be sent to the President. After being caught off guard and fumbling a little, Pfeiffer responded:

“Well, I think that what ‘We The People’, is designed to do is have greater engagement with the American people, to have them – if there are new ideas that come through that process that are helpful in terms of creating jobs or growing the economy or helping middle-class families, they’ll get a fair hearing inside the White House. If there are ideas that are ones that we fundamentally disagree with or are bad ideas and enough people come forward, we’ll respond to why we disagree with that idea and look for a way to work together on other ideas.”

So basically, if the petition falls in line with what the Obama Administration already wants to do, then that petition will get recognized. But if a petition is not part of the President’s agenda, he’ll lecture the American people about how they’re wrong. Got it.

So if the President is just going to ignore the American people (Obamacare, anyone?) he doesn’t agree with, how is this website any different than his political tactics?
